Reading Notes, Alaskan Legends, Part A: The Origin of the Tides

The Nass River

One day, a long, long time ago, there was a man that was wandering down the Nass River. Whenever he camped, he would take the rocks that he would find around him and make interesting shapes with them. His name was Qa, the Raven, and after traveling all around he world, he traveled westward. He lived at a time where the sea was always high, and inthe middle of the world, Qa found a rock in the sea. He built a house underneath the rock and then made a hole through it and the earth and then put a lid on the hole. He hired a man to be in charge of hole, opening it twice. a day to open it and twice a day to close it. When the hole was opened, water would rush into it and the tides would ebb, When he closed the lid, the water came out of it and the rise rose. One day, there was a Tlingit chief that was in the sea hunting otters and he was carried out to Qa's rock by the strong tide which he couldn't escape. As he got closer to the rock, he saw that there were some small trees growing on it so he took his canoe line and threw it over the threes so he wouldn't be pulled into the hole in the rock. After a couple of minute, he heard a grinding noise and it was the man closing the lid on the hole, and then the water began to rise. The chief paddled away as fast as he could before the tide began to ebb again.
