Exploring Reading Options

Exploring the Un-textbook made me even more excited to delve into all of the myths and folklore that this class opens us up to. I will be getting a degree in International Studies so the Units that are specific to a certain region, country, or civilization grab my attention the most. I specifically study China, so of course I clicked on the Chinese Fairytales unit first! I'm excited to read The Favorite of Fortune and the Child of III Luck, as I love reading folklore of Chinese dynasties and emperors and empresses. Although it is a feature of stories of all kinds, the Chinese myths and folklore that I have read to this day usually teach a lesson about morals or ways in which one should live and I can't wait to extrapolate these lessons and apply them to my daily life and my career.

I'm also interested in the tales about The Life of Buddha, as these stories go beyond just being stories, and influence the spiritual and religious beliefs of the people that I know and will meet in the future. I think that reading these tales might one day help me form connections with someone in my life on a deeper level if they have read them or can relate to the content in some way. I love learning about Buddhist teachings and I am looking forward to reading these stories that might help explain some of the fundamentals of the Buddhist way of life.

One unit that I wasn't looking for but was excited to find was the unit on Bible Women. The only time that I have ever read stories from the Bible are from my religious studies classes all all of those stories they have always focused on the men in the Bible or we only read stories that showed women as weak or evil. As many of the people in my life are Christian, I would love to have an understanding of some of the figures that they relate to their faith.
